Quotables: Sounds Like Tyra Banks is Fiercely Dumb

"I don't like the label 'plus-size' -- I call it 'fiercely real.' On 'Top Model,' we call it fiercely real. I don't want to use the term 'plus-size,' because, to me, what the hell is that? It just doesn't have a positive connotation to it. I tend to not use it."
--Tyra Banks tells HuffPost Style about her diabolical plans for revolutionizing the fashion industry.
Except really, this is just a ridiculous notion. It's nice that Tyra is trying to promote a more positive body image, but this simply isn't the way to do it. There are a number of things wrong with calling plus size clothes "fiercely real." It brings up the idea that only women who fit into plus size clothes are "real women," which is just incorrect. And can you imagine how embarrassing it would be to walk into a store and ask "excuse me, where is your fiercely real section?" Because that's the whole thing: it's embarrassing.
She's saying that plus size women need that silly little bit of encouragement when shopping for clothes, and it's just not true: we could use some better clothes in general before we tackle what we call them. Or hey, maybe Tyra could even try getting a "fiercely real" model on her show, one that doesn't just have slightly bigger boobs and hips. Or maybe she could work on trying to get different body types involved in the fashion world in general, maybe in one of those magazines she has connections with. If she just started thinking about changing any of those things, that would do a whole lot more good than universally changing "plus size" to "fiercely real."
So thanks for trying, Tyra, but maybe just try something completely different.
