ABOUT TIME: Lady Gaga Advises Fans to Stop Making Death Threats
Did you guys catch that big fight between Lady Gaga and Perez Hilton yesterday? If not, here's a real quick rundown: Perez was spotted at Lady Gaga's apartment building in New York, and when one of her fans tweeted about it, she freaked right out and told Perez to "STAY AWAY FROM ME + MY FAMILY YOU ARE SICK TRYING TO RENT AN APARTMENT IN MY BUILDING TO STALK ME. LEAVE ME ALONE!!!" Perez confirmed that he was in Gaga's building while he was apartment hunting, but he had no idea that she lived there. But that's all a setup for what we're actually talking about right now: Gaga's fans can be effing crazy.
After Gaga tweeted the VERY SERIOUS message to Perez, he started getting some scary, creepy threats, and he retweeted them. Things like "IM GOING TO KILL UR SON IF U DONT LEAVE GAGA ALONE" and the simple, classic "die," you know the normal for people who dare not worship Lady Gaga. Her more intense fans have been doing this kind of thing for years, and even though Lady Gaga claims to be so against bullying, she usually doesn't have anything to say when these kinds of things happen. Until now!
Here are a few quotes from a message she wrote to her fans today:
Sending threats of any kind, using hateful or abusive language, and the provoking of others on the internet is not supported by me or anything that I stand for. What I’ve seen transpiring is wrong and upsetting to me, and I’ve made it very clear how I feel about equality and compassion.
I ask you to take a pledge with me to continue the change toward positivity, and to recognize that this behavior is wrong. We are stronger than this. We know what we stand for, and what we stand for is bravery. I know this because what I see on the internet is not what I see at my shows. People deal with their insecurities in many different ways. The anonymous nature of social media has made it easy for many to vent their anger by bullying others with no recourse or accountability. But this is not a healthy way to handle your emotions.
So there you go: Lady Gaga confirms that it's possible to speak to someone you don't agree with without threatening to take their life. Who knew?!
