Quotables: Whoopi Goldberg Just Got REAL About Jay Z vs. Solange

"I think Solange was quite ready for him to do whatever he was going to do. This is the thing: If anybody hits you, you have the right. I know that many people are raised in a different way—but if a woman hits you, to me, you have the right to hit her back ... If I slap a man, he has every right to slap me back."

--Whoopi Goldberg explains her feelings on Solange Knowles flipping out on Jay Z in the elevator on that fateful night.

By the way, Whoopi said that a few days ago on "The View," and before we start discussing it, just know that she still totally agrees with herself:

"Hey, I know everyone is freaking out like I said that they would when I said if someone hits you, you have the right to hit them back. I didn't say Jay Z should have hit Solange. I said if you hit a man that man has the right to hit you back. That's what I said. I stand by that. If you hit anybody, they have the right to hit you back. This idea that men aren't supposed to hit women—if you slap a man he has the right to slap you back. Now, not everyone is going to agree and I'm okay with that. But that's how I feel. That's why I don't slap anybody."

All right, now technically, Whoopi's correct. She's right, a lot of people don't like her view on this, but it does make sense. A woman hitting a man isn't somehow more acceptable because traditionally society has seen her gender as more gentle: a woman hitting a man is just as wrong as a man hitting a woman. But the real point here, a point that Whoopi should have expanded on, is that nobody should be hitting anybody. No matter the circumstances, no matter what the sex is of the people involved, getting angry and then dealing with that anger with physical violence is never acceptable. Solange flailing around and kicking at Jay Z, even though she seemingly didn't really harm him, isn't OK. If Jay Z had hauled off and punched her in the face, that wouldn't be OK, either.

Use your words, y'all. Is that really so hard? At the very least, just follow Whoopi's advice: don't slap anybody.

Whoopie is right. If a woman hits a man, there is no reason for him not to hit her back. Fair is fair.

Whoopi never said if a woman hits a man, she "should" get hit back, rather that the man then would have the "right" to hit back. This doesn't mean he has to exercise that right in every case.

The way I see it, hitting someone is like giving them the license to hit you back. You have no right to complain after that.

Men have the right to defend themselves. Women are starting to hit/attack men over the littlest things and think that it is "ok". I agree with Goldberg.

I'm a man and I don't condone domestic violence on any level nor have I EVER hit a woman. My point is walk away from a slap today, a fist tomorrow and sooner or later you'll be running from a knife or gun. I respect all women and I associate with like minded women who respect me but I'll be damned if I'll be a "punching bag" for any woman. Whoopi was merely addressing a problem that is more and more prevalent in these unchivalrous times. I've witnessed a few incidents over the years when men were agressively attacked. There's a video on youtube of a stranger being viciously attacked by a gang of women with knives. Fearing for his life he swung and knocked one of them unconcious...please tell me what else he could have done?

That's why I don't slap the dog shit out of a lot of people..where I come from you should think "now if I hit that m"""""" f"""""" and he hits me back... it might hurt..so I think about it..yes I am a woman..I do not like pain..but if I hit u ..its on!

The correct statement should be..."If a woman hits a man first for everyone to see and there is a recording that is clear HD 3D super Hi-Def quality so there is no confusion... Then a man should be able to hit back.

Although I would never encourage a man abusing a woman, I think it is dangerous to act and talk like a woman hitting a man is not violence, the oft heard quote I hear for years particularly on the air waves and lately by DL Hugely on Baltimore station 95.7 I think, was that “she can't hurt you”, I think that is a foolish and dangerous statement. Couples come in all shapes and sizes, you have a couple where she is 5'9 185-200lb and he is 5'6 140-155 and she gets mad and swings at him; I don't care even if she is clumsy in the effort if she connects his a.. is going down and probably hurt. It is ignorant and foolish on the part of men and hypocritical of women to act like it is less wrong when a woman is violently aggressive towards a man, and comfortably condemning when it is the reverse, Nuff said.

That's crap. I raised my children, pick on someone your own size. A lot of men could kill a woman, if they hit full force. It's not easy to measure the strength behind that 'hit' during an emotionally charged situation and are likely to, hit too hard. You don't hit a child, am woman, or anyone in an uneven match. Someone hits you, you defend yourself, call the police. You don't hit back. And get rid fthat woman.

The way I see it, hitting someone is like giving them the license to hit you back. You have no right to complain after that but does not always make it right.
