Well, Lorde Just Got Disappointing
Look, we love Lorde, like seriously, intensely, borderline creepy LOVE her. She's so talented and refreshing, all that great stuff, but do you know what she just did? She just came out and criticized her song "Royals," the song that put her on the map. And it wasn't even a gentle criticism, either, she really went for it:
"I listen to people covering the song and putting their own spin on it—and I listen to it in every single form except the original one I put out—and I realize that actually it sounds horrible. It sounds like a ringtone from a 2006 Nokia. None of the melodies are cool or good. It's disastrous. Awful... but for the same reason, in the context of the way I released it, it just worked out."
Now, see, that is the exact opposite of cool. This is what some people call "looking a gift horse in the mouth" -- you just don't call the song that made you famous, the song that made it possible for you to do any of these interviews in the first place, "horrible," "disastrous," and "awful." This shouldn't even have to be explained, it's so ridiculous. Lorde is telling the millions of people who heard her song and loved it that they are wrong, and that's sad. It's also pretty dumb. Does she want people to agree with her? Does she specifically want people to disagree with her, is she looking for an ego stroke?
Whatever it is, it's not working.
