Quotables: Elton John is on the Highway to Heaven

"These are old and stupid things. ... If Jesus Christ was alive today, I cannot see him, as the Christian person that he was and the great person that he was, saying this could not happen. He was all about love and compassion ... and that's what the church should be about."

--Elton John during a recent interview on his meeting with the current Pope, and what his thoughts are on Jesus, and if you're as open-minded as Elton, here, then you just might agree with him. I mean, what, we're supposed to presume to really, really know the mind and heart of a man who physically existed over 2,000 years ago just because we're taught what man at large says about the preferences of gender when it comes to sex? You never, ever do know for sure.

Also, this isn't the first time Elton's brought up Christianity and same-sex unions. You might remember an interview Elton did with Parade magazine a few years ago, intimating that Jesus himself was gay:

"I think Jesus was a compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems. On the cross, he forgave the people who crucified him. Jesus wanted us to be loving and forgiving. I don't know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East -- you're as good as dead."

So -- what if God really was one of us? Just a stranger on the bus, trying to make his way ... you know, home?

I agree with him on the first part. I actually use that all the time myself during a debate about gay rights and marriage. I ask "can you really picture Jesus, of all people, walking up to a gay person and being cruel or telling them they are lesser?"

As for the second part, I think it is out of line. Speculating about that, is just crude and disrespectful IMO.
